The flag book was first created in 1979 by renowned book artist Hede Kyle. It has become a favorite structure of book artists who want to add dimension, rhythm and movement to their work. The book is built on an accordion spine using rows of carefully cut and positioned “flags”. The structure lends itself to the use of photographs or material benefiting from repetition.
Learn how to use the “flag” concept in several different variations. Working with stamped or cut out images, decorative papers and photographs, you will have created two or three different flag prototypes by the end of the class.
Kit fee of $15 payable to instructor at class time includes: supplies to make three different flag books (papers for covers, spines and flags, adhesives, decorative papers and photographs) plus an informative “how-to” handoutSupply List:
Metal ruler (at least 12”)
0.5mm pencil with eraser (important for accurate measuring)
Self-healing cutting mat
Craft knife with extra blades
Scissors for detail cutting
1-3 rubber stamps (images should be objects suitable for cutting out: heart, teddy bear, butterfly etc.)
1 or 2 texture stamps that can be used as background on flags
Several dye based stamp pads
Optional:
one or two punches that cut shapes at least 1” or larger
A paper cutter if you have one and are traveling by car
