This is such a fun book … it’s not difficult, and although we will be adding images, you won’t be painting them from scratch, or need to know how to draw. We will use my sketches (or you can bring your own), and layer them on fabric, add more collage elements, finger paint, add texture and washes of color. Explore simple ways to create fabric landscapes, and/or abstract compositions. We will add blank journal pages inside, and complete the signature with more collage elements. Covers are thick and sturdy, yet flexible, and can be changed to any size you desire, or, can even be used as frameable art. No sewing required, but you can bring a sewing machine if you would rather machine sew the pages to the signature instead of by hand, or if you would like to add sewing as an embellishment.
Kit Fee of $10 payable to Instructor at class time includes: color copies of my images, sketch patterns, deli paper, waxed linen and needle, vinyl and various other goodies.
Supply List:
-Small bottle of Soft Matte Gel Medium.
-Small container of white gesso.
-A couple utility brushes about 1” wide. Not foam brushes.
-Paint Palette. Flat will work best.
-Palette knife. A trowel shape is best. Flat ones are difficult to use. If you don’t have one, a credit card will work.
-Water container.
-Paper towels or paint rags.
-Pencil.
-About 40 sheets of journal paper. I used 8.5” X 14” for the sample book.
-Fat, fairly long round or liner brush. Brushes with tiny short bristles won’t work.
-3 or 4 bottles of acrylic paint, along with a brown and a black. Any brand will work, even craft paint.
-2 pieces of duck cloth, or other canvas-type cloth in cream or white. This needs to be a fairly close weave, and will be used as the base for your book. I cut mine 13 X 16 for the sample book (this will be folded in half), but you may make your book any size you desire.
-Collage goodies… anything you would like to add to your book. Ideas include; images, ephemera, tags, lace, buttons, beads, feathers, text from books etc.
-Fabric scraps for creating covers of book and using in signatures. Quilting cotton, sheer, prints, home decorator fabrics, and upholstery fabric are a few ideas.
-Hair dryer if you have one. We can share.
-Glue stick.
-Tacky glue if you will be attaching buttons or other dimensional embellishments.
-Small awl (thin, paper punches work best), and a small cutting mat to lay signatures on as you punch holes.
Optional items:
Sewing machine and thread if you would like stitching on your book and to sew the pages to the signature.
