Wildly Creative Art Journaling

This is a 6 hour workshop taught over two evenings, half on Friday evening and half on Saturday evening.

It's time to create the richest, most passionate art journals possible, in a FUN 6 hour workshop! Explore the the best and newest techniques, from page preparations to image transfers. Discover innovative ways to mix text and images. Then, add dazzle with embellishments from paint to beading. In this unique, high-energy workshop for all levels, you'll discover new depth and dimensions for your journaling. Whether you seek zen simplicity or old-world opulence in your art, you'll find inspiration and fresh ideas here!

We'll start with page preparation, including the pros & cons of gessos, and how to support the heaviest and funkiest embellishments. Then, we'll delve into the ways to mix text and art, with a series of happy journal prompts to get yours started.

Aisling will demonstrate the basics of illustration, including watercolor, acrylics, and pen & ink. Even if you can't draw a stick figure, you'll discover sneaky tips to capture what you see, on paper.

Then, we'll explore the basics of collage in two- and three-dimensions, comparing cut- and torn-paper techniques. Find out which magazines provide the best text and the perfect pictures for your personal style of collage.

Finally, we'll add embellishments inside & outside our journals. Aisling will teach techniques to add beads, gold leaf, easy embroidery, fabric, image transfers, tags, fiber, and more.

Whether this is your first journal or your hundredth, you'll discover new techniques and approaches. You'll take home a well-started journal, and the confidence to continue telling your story, exploring your options, and processing the important moments in your unique art journal.

Each student will receive a booklet overflowing with innovative art ideas, to enjoy further journaling adventures at home.

Supply list :

a new or ongoing journal

a pencil and eraser (sharpener is optional)

a pen and/or gel pen for writing

gesso: white or black
(if you're using black, Golden brand is recommended - if you're using white, it's okay to use other brands)

scissors

favorite adhesive for paper, and/or a favorite all-purpose adhesive (recommended: Golden Soft Gel Medium in matte or gloss)

two or three sponge brushes - cheapest ones are fine

three or four sheets of wax paper (from grocery store) at least as big as your journal pages

one magazine to cut up, and another one to cut up & share with others

optional: embellishments, such as: glitter, gold or metallic leaf (you do not need special glue/sizing), beads (and needle & thread), fabric scraps, additional papers (vintage, tags, funny images, advertising items, illustrations from books), colored or printed tissue paper, eyelets & hardware to attach them, paper punches, ribbon, embroidery floss & needles, etc. , basic paints (watercolors or acrylics) IF you already own them, or really want to learn to use them.

If you are using watercolors , also bring:

paint brushes - at least one medium-to-big one that will cover broad areas of the page quickly, and one fine point one, for details

a paper cup or something, to hold water

a few paper towels or napkins or an old towel, to dry brushes a bit between colors

a fine point waterproof pen in black, such as Pigma---02 point or larger--or even a fine point Sharpie

If you are using acrylics , also bring:

paint brushes - at least one that is flat, about 1/2" wide, and one that is smaller for details. If you're bringing more, add a wider brush first. Cheap, flexible nylon bristles are fine; avoid stiff, hog bristle brushes for this class.

a paper cup or something to hold water

a good stack of paper towels, napkins, or several towels, to wipe your brush clean between colors

a palette knife in any size or shape - the $1 white plastic version is fine
