Solving the Composition Conundrum

We all know that having a successful composition is the key to having a successful work of art. In this class you will learn the tricks of the trade to help you create successful compositions in your collage and mixed media artwork. Claudine will show you some of her favorite composition tips and techniques for enhancing your artwork, then we'll create collages using our new composition knowledge.

Supply List:

Please try to bring as many of the items as you can as it will enhance your workshop experience.

*About 3 tubes of your favorite acrylic colors
*A journal or sketchbook to work in, we will be creating many of our composition studies and experiments in this notebook.
*Your favorite glue, I like to use Golden's Regular Gel Matte
*2 or 3 art-making surfaces. These could be pre-stretched canvases, canvas board, or canvas paper, mat board or watercolor paper. Please think small (about 5"x7" to 8"x10") as we'll be doing quite a few exercises and you'll need lots of different surfaces to work on. If you are traveling from a distance I suggest you bring a pad of canvas paper (I like to use Fredrix brand), you can find it in the aisle of the craft or art supply store where they keep the sketchpads. One pad of canvas paper has about 10 sheets in it.
*Paint brushes about 2 or 3, any size. Buy cheap brushes if you don't have these already; sponge brushes will also work too.
*Xacto knife or scissors
*Bring something to use as a water jar - old cup, old jar or paper cup, etc.
*Some waxed paper or paper plates to use as a palette for your paints
*Heat gun or a hairdryer - I will have one for everyone to share
*A roll of paper towels as the venue might not have enough for everybody
*Please bring 2 used magazines, any magazines that you have, we will be using them for composition exercises.
*Elements for collage (papers, old photos color copies, b/w copies), we will do exercises in composition using collage materials. NOTE: Bring a variety of images in a variety of shapes and sizes. It's also good idea to bring images large enough to fill the canvas sizes you are bringing. It will help you have better composition if your images are large enough to fill 50% - 75% of your canvas surface.

NOTE: When I demonstrate, I will be using Golden's Acrylic Paints because I find them superior to other paints. However, feel free to bring paints that you already own. If you choose to buy Golden paints, before going to the store, I recommend checking out the Golden web site to familiarize yourself with all the different types of paints they offer. www.goldenpaints.com . You can find Golden's paints at your local Michael's Craft Store or art supply store.
