Revel in the Unexpected

If you've read Claudine's book, Collage Discovery Workshop, then you've had a glimpse of some of the exciting techniques covered in this workshop. Explore these methods and the collage process with Claudine yourself! In this class you'll learn a few of her favorite background techniques, image transfer methods using b/w and color photocopies, using household materials as art supplies, discussions about artist block & other skills needed for fulfilling art making.

The flexible nature of this workshop will afford each student an opportunity for one-on-one guidance, so come armed with your questions about collage and art making and we can help each grow as artists!

• 3 background techniques that will help you enhance your art surfaces
• 3 different transfer techniques, and using transparency in your artwork
• working on composition to improve your artwork
• tips, ideas, discussions and more!

This is the supply list for the 'revel in the unexpected' class. In this class you'll learn a few of my favorite background techniques, image transfer methods using b/w and color photocopies, using household materials as art supplies, discussions about artist block & other skills needed for fulfilling art making.

A small amount of collage items will be provided to create with, however please bring a few of your favorite things to work with for this class. Don't feel that you have to bring tons of stuff, but a nice variety will help.

required items:

•  Please bring about 3 or 4 tubes of your favorite acrylic colors

•  One 4-ounce jar or a 4oz. tube (or larger) of Titanium White

•  One 4-ounce jar (or larger) of Golden's Regular Gel Matte

•  3 or 4 art-making surfaces. These could be pre-stretched canvases, canvas board, or canvas paper, mattboard or watercolor paper. Please think small (about 5"x7" to 8"x10") as we'll be doing quite a few exercises and you'll need lots of different surfaces to work on. If you are traveling from a distance I suggest you bring a pad of canvas paper, you can find it in the aisle of the craft or art supply store where they keep the sketchpads. One pad of canvas paper has about 10 sheets in it.

•  Paint brushes about 2 or 3, any size. I like to have one that's about 2 inches wide. Buy cheap brushes if you don't have these already. I find that the 50cent house paint brushes from the hardware store work great! Sponge brushes will also work well too.

•  Xacto knife or scissors

•  A few Xerox and color copies of old family photos and images you like. NOTE: Bring a variety of images in a variety of shapes and sizes. It's also good idea to bring images large enough to fill the canvas sizes you are bringing. It will help you have better composition if your images are large enough to fill 50% - 75% of your canvas surface.

•  If you plan to work in assemblage, bring a cigar box or other box, to work in.

•  A variety (about 10-15) of paper collage supplies & small objects

•  Bring a something to use as a water jar - old cup, old jar or paper cup, etc.

•  Some waxed paper or paper plates to use as a palette for your paints

•  Heat gun or hairdryer. You don't have to bring this if you don't want to. I will have one for everyone to share.

•  A roll of paper towels as the venue might not have enough for everybody.

NOTE: When I demonstrate, I will be using Golden's Acrylic Paints because I find them superior to other paints. However, feel free to bring paints that you already own. If you choose to buy Golden paints, before going to the store, I recommend checking out the Golden web site to familiarize yourself with all the different types of paints they offer. www.goldenpaints.com.
