There is a certain beauty to the simplistic and expressionistic paintings of ancient man. These earliest forms of art found in caves in Europe date back approximately 40,000 years ago. Whether they were used for religious, storytelling or just for art sake, they are fascinating and fun to recreate. We will start with a textured faux-rock watercolor background using gesso. Then using earthy watercolor pigments, natural colors, water-soluble pencils, pens, and oil-based markers, we will recreate some of life's most beautiful and intriguing paintings and colorful rock art in your journal. We will make a stamp out of our favorite drawing to share with the class. These simple yet intriguing drawings and paintings capture our interest and by exploring the icons, symbols and pictures from around the world, you will find new personal symbols to use in your art journals.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

• no kit fee, just $10 for supplies

Instructor Provided (for use in-class, and to share):

• Small watercolor palettes for students to use if they do not have their own and want to try watercolor painting
• Earth pigmented watercolor paint
• Artist tape
• white and black gesso
• texture makers
• stamp carving supplies

Student should bring:

• Watercolor paints, brushes and palette.
• Arches 140 lb watercolor paper or your Arches watercolor journal - about 6 pieces 7" x 10" or (the better the quality the paper is the happier you will be with your final product)
• a drawing pencil and kneaded eraser
• permanent ink pen
• Uni-ball Signo White gel ink pen
• water container
• washcloth or sponge
• Bring oil paint markers such as Sharpies if you have them. (Here are some of my favorite watercolor paint colors: Winsor Newton or Daniel Smith brand of French Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt Blue, Permanent or Quinacridone Rose, Winsor or permanent Red, Hansa Yellow Medium or Lemon Yellow and Quinacridone Gold) A good way to get start with watercolor supplies would be to purchase my DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolor Jacqueline Newbold Traveling Kit and the Jacqueline Newbold Expansion Kit.
