Sumi is a permanent black ink made from vegetable soot that makes very fine and subtle marks on the paper, which is why it headlines in the eastern tradition of calligraphy. I use it for making marks and textures as stand alone art or on paper to use in book arts and collage.

We will try exercises that I developed to get different effects on the paper using feathers, dish soap, crayons, plastic wrap, walnut ink, Yupo paper and lots of other materials. You will also receive how-to instructions with labels for your papers and a folder to store them in, resources for the materials we use, and a mark-making kit to keep.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):
