Lost Memory Found - Photos and Letters on Fabric

Fragments of the past are the jumping off point for this workshop as we combine fabric collage, lettering and photo transfer to fabric techniques.

A memory piece will be developed using these techniques and vintage family photos. Various phooto tranfer techniques including gel medium and copier transfer paper will be presented.

This memory piece can be all about the artist or someone you love or admire or your family. The artist should not only gather photos but also mementos and collage materials (perhaps fabric from a wedding gown or prom dress). These will be included as design elements and combined with lettering to create a unique collage. Basic lettering on fabric techniques will be presented to label and write out the stories of the past.

Adhering these archeological finds to fabric with fusible bond, stitchery and glue will create unique fragments that could be joined as a quilt or bound as a fabric scrapbook. The emphasis will be placed on theme development and design.

Supply List :

Zig Calligraphy Pens – a couple of colors that go with your theme

F & W Ink – found at art stores in the airbrush section/Pearlescent ink if you want shiny

Large flat or foam brushes

Mixing dishes or palettes

Rags or paper towels

Disappearing Ink marker – available at fabric stores

Scraps of fabric – various colors and textures

Amulets, beads, memorabilia, mementos

At least one yard unprimed canvas – light or heavy weight, the smoother the better

Fabric Scissors, Ruler

Color Xerox copies of old and new photos and images

Color Copy some photos or images onto June Tailor or Tulip brand Photo Transfer Paper for color copiers or scan images into your computer and print onto inkjet transfer paper for fabric.

Jewel-It Glue or like

Any permanent marker – calligraphy edge or monocline (your choice of color)

Needles, Embroidery floss or thread

If you are commuting, an iron and press cloth

Think about a basic theme for your memory piece – acquire elements, fabrics and amulets that would go well with your photos. Have a variety of sizes of photos to play with.
