The Gypsy's Notebook

Price: $125

Karen Michel

In this class, we will channel our inner gypsy and create a beautiful and sturdy art journal to chronicle all the bit of knowledge we gain through our artistic adventures. The book is created from lightweight wood, which opens up many possibilities for altering the cover and surface through drilling, sanding, and more. The spine is bound with fabric, adding a soft touch. After the construction is complete, we will focus on embellishing the cover with paint, collage, charms, beads, wires, fibers, or all of the above.

There will be Book Kits fee of $8 payable to instructor at class time - this will contain paper for the book (books will have 60 pages, 120 front & back) , wood covers and spine (books will measure 11 ¾" x 5 ½" on completion), fabric and waxed linen thread for binding.

I will also bring templates for your gypsy portrait, though you are free to bring your own if you so desire. I will have all the foundation supplies available to students: primer paint, sandpaper, sewing needles, drill, acrylic paints, wire, India ink, beads, and various other fun materials.

Supply List : 1 small jar of Gel Medium ( I recommend Golden's or Pebeo), Some Paintbrushes: small, medium & large, A charm or pendant for your gypsy!, A Black Gel Pen and a White Gel Pen (Uniball creates great white gel pens), bone folder.

Optional supplies , not necessary but fun!

Set of gel pens (I am LOVING the new Gelly Roll Glaze Pens!)
Beads ( I will have some, but if you have some favorite colors, feel free to bring them)
Fabric (once again, I will have some, but if you have some favorite textiles, feel free to bring them)
Eyelets- the real small ones are great for finishing off holes drilled into the wood for bead and fiber

That's all! Feel free to email me with any questions: karen@karenmichel.com
