Drawing For People Who Can't Draw

If you can't draw a stick figure, much less a straight line, but you'd love to be able to illustrate your journals, scrapbooks, and other art with drawings, this class is for you!

In the morning, you'll learn the tricks that make drawing easy--even if you're all thumbs--and how to bluff your way through a surprisingly good sketch. Expect to laugh a lot and really enjoy this lighthearted, relaxing class.

In the afternoon, you'll learn about color, and how you can paint (or use pastels) like a professional, even if you can't draw. You'll complete at least one picture in color. And, you'll learn the basics of using color for your travel journals and more.

Supply List :  
For the morning - Drawing pencils (at least one each in 2B, 4B, and HB), a pencil sharpener, a kneaded rubber eraser, and a sketch pad (9" x 12" is good) or several sheets of white drawing paper. Also, a black rollerball or gel pen.

And, bring a photo of yourself as you look now. Your driver's license will work if you don't have any photos that you like.

Optional :

Artist's "spray fixative" to keep your sketches from smudging.

Black paper and white or pastel gel pens.

For the afternoon, choose one or both media to learn with. Bring the supplies listed after your chosen medium, oil pastels or acrylic paints.  

(Please note, we will not be working with watercolors. They are one of the leading reasons why people think that painting is difficult. We will also not bother with chalk pastels. They are very messy, and oil pastels are far more fun for beginners.)

Oil pastels : Bring a set of oil pastels (any brand, any size) and a sketch pad or drawing paper and a black roller ball or gel pen.

Optional : A pad (or several sheets) of canvas paper.

Acrylic paints : Bring one tube (NOT a jar or bottle) each, all the same brand, of acrylic paints in these colors: Cobalt blue, Alizarin Crimson, Cadmium Red Medium (or equivalent juicy fire engine red), and any yellow that you like. Also bring a tube of white paint. And, bring one tube of any color that you absolutely love. You'll also need three brushes. One should be about 1" wide, and stiff like hogs bristle (white). Cheap is fine. One should be about 1/2" wide, and flat, with soft bristles. And your third brush should be something very small like a watercolor brush...round and about 1/8" wide. You'll need a cup to hold water, and a white styrofoam plate or two, for a palette. Also bring a bunch of paper towels for wiping your brush, and then cleanup. And, bring a package of three canvas boards, no smaller than 8" x 10" and no larger than 11" x 14". Optional : Gel medium (gloss, soft gel if there's a choice) in the same brand as your paints.
