Mabel Dean

Mabel Dean is a mixed media artist and popular art teacher from Tucson, Arizona. In 1993, after a varied career that included teaching, writing, consulting, banking and marketing she embarked on a new journey in the arts. At first she immersed herself in study and took a variety of classes from nationally acclaimed book and paper artists. During that period she discovered artists' books and has been involved in making them ever since. She has been teaching book arts, journaling and mixed media classes since 1995.

She helped to found the FeMail Press, a group of seven book artists who met at a Susan E. King workshop in 1994 and have subsequently published a limited edition work each year. In the fall of 2000 she invited interested artists to create a new organization for book arts. In January, 2001 she became the first President of PaperWorks, the Sonoran Collective for Book and Paper Artists. She has been active in other arts organizations including the Southern Arizona Scribes, the Southern Arizona Watercolor guild, the Collage Association of Southern Arizona and the Friends of Calligraphy in San Francisco.
