Artwear 101

I'm obsessed with altering all my clothes--from shirts to jeans to skirts to coats. My favorite thing to do is to make clothes into wearable art journals, and that's what we'll do in this day-long workshop. If you've seen any of my Journal Skirts, you know there's a LOT you can do to your clothes!

You can either bring something to alter or work with the muslin I provide--these can be easily made into simple shawls (I'll have samples of mine) later. If you choose to work with a garment of your own, you'll want to bring one that's cotton and has a smooth, light-colored surface--soft Faded denim is great, chambray is wonderful.

We'll try as many techniques as we can, from painting to stamping and stenciling to writing, working with transfers, simple appliqué, beading, embroidery, etc. I'll talk about creating wearable shrines on your clothes. My goal is to get non-sewers to see that you don't have to be able to sew to do some really things to what you wear.

Supply List :  

--rubber stamp alphabet that will work on fabric--not too tiny, not too detailed--simple is best for this
--fabric stamps you might want to use, esp. designs or motifs or patterns
--small embroidery hoop (to hold the fabric while you embroider or bead or whatever)
--embroidery floss (and needle)
--beads (and needle and thread)
--buttons or sequins or fibers, etc.  

We'll play with all of the above plus iron-on transfers, fibers, and anything else I think of or find between now and then--we'll have fun, experiment and play with all our supplies.
