Altered Altars

In this workshop, traditional books will serve as creative springboards for developing artist books that house ideas and relics. Bring a special book to alter and we will construct windows, doors, pull tabs, pockets, and various other surprises to showcase our unique treasures. Whether spiritual or secular, students will use imagery and objects to create vessels filled with symbolism and meaning.

Supplies needed:

• Old hard cover book
• Acrylic paint
• Bone folder
• Colored pencils/ markers/ chalks
• Decorative or handmade papers
• Deli container for water
• Foam core
• Glue and paint brushes
• Matte gel medium
• Rivets /eyelets/ setting tools
• Rubber stamps/ ink pads
• Ruler
• Sand paper
• Scissors
• Triangle
• X-acto knife/ utility knife/ cutting mat

Xerox copies, wire, wood scraps, matchboxes, personal memorabilia, old letters, postcards, photos, antique book pages, maps, stamps, rubber stamps, small doll parts, fabric, beads, keys, buttons, coins, eyeglasses, magnifying glasses, lenses, game pieces, playing cards, bones, feathers, leaves, teeth, fossils, dried flowers, screws, nails, washers, etc.
