Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Process and Project

I've always been attracted to the odd and in this class we'll revel in all things odd and curious, especially those that come from our own hands. We will explore line and paint, using a few images done by the masters as our jumping off place, with the understanding from the start that our goal is NOT to copy or try to reproduce those works in any way, but using them as a resource to gather information about color, shape, design, and inspiration to further aid us in developing our own unique style. Much of the day will be spent working on background techniques, drawing and painting faces and people using pencils, brushes, and fingers, and adding elements of collage when inspired to do so. We will work on 2-3 pieces simultaneously to encourage the 'flow' state of the right brain while at the same time allowing one piece to dry while we work on another. This is an intuitive based painting class with lots of technique; it is well suited to all levels, including beginners.

Supplies provided by Instructor for student’s use in class:
Use of instructors paints, mediums, hair dryers
Eyedroppers
Little cups
Paper towels
Collage images

Supply List :
-Acrylic paints: black, titanium white, quinacridone crimson, quinacridone nickel azo gold, and other colors of your choice including a deep blue and brown. I prefer Golden paints but craft paints, such as FolkArt and others, are also fine for this project - bring colors that you love working with.
-8 ounce jar of soft gel medium (matte)
-8 ounce container of gesso
-Small spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol (bottles in the cosmetics section of department stores)
-A piece of fine grit sandpaper
-Pencil
-3 paint brushes, small for details, medium round, and larger (#12-14 flat) for applying gesso
-Three 9" x 12"" canvas panels (not stretched canvas) if you want to go bigger, that's fine
-Stabilo Aquarellable black marking pencil
-Black gel pen (Uniball Gel Impact is my favorite)
-White gel pen (Uniball Signo UM-153 is my favorite)
-Scissors
-4-6 samples of artwork that depict faces, people, animals, etc, at least 8.5" x 11". These can be copies you've made from a book of a favorite artist or illustrator. Examples would be work from Modigliani, Chagall, Frida Kalo, etc. We will NOT harm these pages or books in any way but use them solely as a reference for some of the technique exercises and as a source of inspiration as we create own unique works.
-Water container
-Paint pallet (disposable paint pallet tablets are great)
-Paint rag

Optional Supplies :
Paint apron
Hair dryer to speed drying time
Baby wipes
Latex (or non-latex) gloves if you need them
