It's All in the Bag $130

DJ Pettitt

Transform plain artist canvas into a smooth, print like surface that can be used throughout all of your art projects including altered books, paper arts, collage, and wearable art. Learn the technique and create a 7” X 9” handbag or a similar sized journal/folder in class, or spend class time creating variations of the basic technique to take home and use in your art later. Beginners are welcome, but may not finish an entire purse in class. There will be plenty of time to master the technique and produce a fun folder if you are a beginner, or hesitant to try a sewing project. Please email with any questions and to let me know which project you will be making.

Kit Fee of $5 payable to instructor at class time includes:

Canvas for fused base
Fusible webbing
Magnetic snap closure for purse
Grommets and cording for folder
Extra canvas if you would like to make multiple fused pieces to take home and create with later
Detailed instruction sheet
Fused sample
Bits of ephemera, foil etc. to embed in your fused piece

Supply List:

** Basic Supply List: Essential supplies for the basic fusing technique
One 8-ounce jar Golden Clear Tar Gel available at most Michael's, craft supply stores and art supply stores
2 or 3 colors of acrylic paint. Include white or cream. Any brand will work
Iron. A craft iron will work but is slower to fuse the surface
Trowel shaped palette knife. Inexpensive plastic ones available at Michael’s are fine
Small kitchen type towel to use under project while heating.

**Please add the following list to the Basic Supply List above if you choose to make a purse in class
Sewing machine, thread, scissors. If you are not able to bring one, please let me know
1/3 yard fabric for purse lining, and tab
1/3 yard iron-on interfacing if lining fabric is lightweight
1/3 yard quilt batting or fleece
Fabric for embellishing the purse. Small scraps to cut and embellish handbag in coordinating colors
Purse strap. Cording can be purchased in any fabric store. Purchase the length you would like the finished strap to be plus an inch
Small, thin, snippets of torn paper, book text, threads, ephemera etc. to embed in fused piece
Decorative button for tab and any embellishments you wish to sew to your purse. Needle and matching thread to hand sew them on.

** Please add the following list to the Basic Supply List above if you choose to make a folder in class:
10”X15” piece of fabric for lining inside covers of the folder
About 20 pages that you would like to bind in your folder. 9 X 14” journal paper works well, but as long as the pages that you choose to add don’t exceed about1/8” tall when stacked, and can be punched with a paper punch, bring anything you like.
Small, thin, snippets of torn paper, book text, threads, ephemera etc. to embed in fused piece.
