Good Medicine Dolls $65

Jessica Wesolek

These dolls, made of Ultrasuede and leather, are based on traditional Plains Indian "Marriage Dolls", which were presented to newlyweds as a blessing of their union. Each doll has a pocket on the back to be filled with "good medicine" in the form of cedar berries, porcupine quills, corn pollen, etc. The dolls are then tied together with a "bundling" cord to symbolize the relationship between them.

Though we will make a pair of "marriage dolls" in this workshop, they can represent any relationship: parent & child, friends, siblings, or even two versions of yourself. And this type of doll can be made to bring "good medicine" to any part of your life - your garden, your art, etc.

We will use the newest, foolproof, image transfer techniques to make our Ultrasuede look exactly like the painted hide used on the original dolls.

This is a project workshop. Every student will complete two dolls in class and embellish them with jewelry, beads and feathers in whatever time remains.

Please Note: This workshop is different enough from the Parfleche workshop that students will enjoy taking both if so desired.

All necessary materials will be provided.

Please bring these tools:

Options shown in parantheses can be substituted, but will not work as well):
Watercolor Markers in basic colors
A Cutting Wheel with new, sharp blade (You can use a Fabric or Rubber Cutting Scissors instead, but a wheel cutter is much easier. You need the cutting mat either way)
Self-Healing Cutting Mat at least 9"x12"
Japanese Screw Punch with #3 tip (or 1/8" eyelet punch and small hammer)
Metal Ruler with cork back
Vanishing Ink Fabric Marker (or ball point pen)
