  Riki Schumacher $145

Student Level:
Intermediate
Type of Workshop: Project
Prerequisite: None

In this metals workshop, you will learn how to make, and incorporate, a tab setting into an assemblage pendant. You can frame a lovely antique photo pin, a cabochon or almost anything you bring! I can’t wait to teach you how to do a no solder setting, using sheet metal and cold connections. You will also learn how to layer metal stampings and found objects into the focal, working them in to the design. So many things can be tab set like antique items, cabochons, found objects, and just about anything that is flat on the bottom side. Many items that can’t be set in a traditional bezel, and there are tons of objects that can’t be soldered on to metal due to their fragility. So often, tab setting is a perfect solution! And when the focal is completed, you can add some chain, pearls, beads or bling, and finish off your necklace.

We will design a tab setting to fit your object, making all the calculations necessary for a perfect fit. I’ll show you how to make a backing for the item you are setting, then how to layer and connect it. Make the setting plate, cut and file metal, and even texture the tabs for a decorative look. We will be drilling, filing, applying patina and hand finishing. Learn to tab set, guaranteeing an even and tight for your objects. This method may be used over and over again when you get home, where you can set those items you’ve been wanting to but didn’t have the know how. If you bring an object to set that is smaller than an about one inch, you will need to use your jewelers saw and blades. Making tabs are a wonderful skill to have. Using them in your work is not only gorgeous, but a great way to improve your work! Hope you can join me.
