Tool Making 101

Knowing how to make your own tools will be a skill that will serve you well in jewelry making and metal working. This workshop will introduce you to the basic methods of making simple tools. We will cover the shaping, hardening, and finishing of steel tools, as well as tool design. We will also learn how to modify existing tools to meet your specific design requirements. We will be making several tools suitable for texturing, stamping, bezel setting, chasing, and repousse’. Learning these skills will provide you with a whole new range of options, allowing you to create or alter tools to suit the task at hand.

Supply Fee of $5 payable to Instructor at class time includes: Steel bar stock, Sandpaper, Hack Saws and Blades, Propane/Oxygen
Supply/Tool List:
- 22 or 24 gauge copper sheet approx 4 inches by 4 inches
- Eye Protection
- Ear Protection
- Metal Files 6" or 8" flat smooth or bastard (available at hardware stores)
- Needle File Set – round, half-round, flat, triangle, etc.
- Bench Pin or Vise
- Vise-Grip Pliers – any size
- Jeweler’s saw and blades (size #4/0)
- Ball Peen hammer
- Dremel Tool ( or similar rotary tool) with grinding attachments
- Work gloves
Optional:
Magnifying glasses or visor
