Stained "Glass" Portals

Make a pendant with a colorful transparent window and a frame of etched copper or brass. The transparent windows are made with resin coated papers or shrink plastic. Embellish the pendant with fabric, beads and chain. Techniques and skills covered in the class will include: use of resin coated papers, shrink plastic, and Faux Bone, along with use of jeweler's saw, chemical etching of brass and copper, use of cold connections, chain and clasp making techniques, and safety considerations.

Students should be able to complete 2 large and 2 small pendants similar to the example photos. If time permits, experimentation on chains, clasps, and cords will be encouraged. Students will leave the class with new skills and techniques for creating their own jewelry pieces

Supply fee of $10 payable to instructor at class time includes: Sheet brass, copper, Faux Bone, screws, rivets, etching chemicals, shrink plastic, resin coated papers, and miscellaneous supplies will be provided, as well as polishing papers, rubber stamps, ink and embellishments to share

Supply/Tool List:

  • Brass and/or copper wire – 18 and/or 20 gauge, non-coated approximately 7 feet for chains.
  • Lightweight, sheer fabric – at least 3” x 12”
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Prismacolor Pencils or Sharpie colored permanent markers
  • Basic jewelry making tools will be needed, including round nose and flat nose pliers, files, wire cutters
  • Small hammer
  • Bench Pin
  • Jeweler's saw
  • Bench block or small anvil
  • Metal shears
  • Hole punching pliers (1.8 mm) or small hand drill
  • Small metal file
  • Eye Protection and Apron
