Repoussé without Pitch

The term repoussé refers to punching sheet metal from the backside to create raised areas on the front side in low to high relief. Chasing refers to detailing the front side of the piece using steel, wood, plastic or brass tools to texture, stamp, undercut and refine the surface. Since the Bronze Age, these techniques have been used to create relief from sheet metal and to add detail to the front of the sheet. This class will introduce students to chasing and repousse without the use of expensive and messy pitch. Techniques such as lining, punching, undercutting and texturing will be covered. Students will be able to complete one or more pieces similar to the example photos.
Taking Tool Making 101 prior to this workshop is highly recommended.
Supply Fee of $3 payable to Instructor at class time includes: 1 dozen brass micro bolts and nuts, Copper ball chain and clasp
Supply/Tool List:
- Plastiline Modeling Clay (2lb) – I recommend 'Non Sulphurated Plasteline’- Medium hardness. Available from Sculpture Depot
- Sheet metal – 20 or 22 gauge Copper approx. 6" x 6". You can also bring 22 or 24 gauge brass or nickel silver to combine into a finished piece like in the sample photos.
- Chasing and Repoussé Tools – tools made in 'Tool Making 101' class or bring your own chasing and repoussé tools
- Steel dapping punches – a variety of sizes
- Eye Protection
- Ear Protection
- Bench Block and Cushion (something to help absorb the hammering noise)
- Jeweler’s saw and blades (size #2/0)
- Chasing Hammer
Optional:
- Magnifying glasses or visor
- 1.25mm punch pliers
