Clear Applications - Jewelry (part 2)

Using the translucent, ICE resin glazed papers they created in my “Clear Applications-Paper Glazing” class; students will explore the possibilities for using these amazing papers in jewelry making. The emphasis will be on working with the glazed and altered papers to create a beautiful mixed media pendant. Students will also learn how to make unique links using resin papers and will incorporate various forms of silk into their necklaces. Other techniques covered will include wire wrapping, rosary style links, jump ring making, drawing a bead on wire using a torch, clasp making and attaching silk cord and ribbon. A variety of finished jewelry pieces, created with glazed papers, will be shown and discussed in class.

This class is part 2 of two classes designed to inspire students in the application of these extraordinary papers to jewelry work. Students are required to bring resin glazed paper to this class and are encouraged to take part 1: “Clear Applications-Paper Glazing.” These classes are taught independently of each other but students will benefit most by taking them both.

Resin glazed papers
6” needle nose pliers with teeth (hardware store)
Chain nose jewelry pliers
Extra-long round nose pliers (riogrande.com)
Small round nose jewelry pliers
Diagonal cutters for wire (craft store type)
Small hammer-ball peen on one side (hardware store)
Rubber dead blow hammer or rawhide mallet
Bench block
Bench pillow (or hand towel) for use under bench block
Awl
Butane torch
Extra butane (optional)
Water container for quenching
Measuring tape or ruler
Diamond Glaze, small bottle
Small paint brush
Scissors
Pencil
Beads/pearls/crystals for body of the necklace (see photos)
Seed beads

Optional supplies:
Sterling or other wire if you prefer not to work in steel wire
