In this workshop students will gain knowledge of gouache painting. Gouache is an opaque watercolor, with forgiving tendencies. Students will enjoy a relaxing day painting reference pictures that will be supplied. There will be several demonstrations and plenty of individual attention to assist everyone. Students will be encouraged to creatively conceive in the light of their individual belief, rather than copy a picture, adding to the imagination and unique nature of the work they produce. This medium will be painted on a small format, easily transported for creative travel excursions, for use in a journal or plein air painting. They can also be framed as with any fine art form. The medium is very versatile, used as a watercolor, or opaque acrylic, and realistic interpretation is easily achieved. If you've struggled with watercolor in the past, you may just have found your niche in the creative world of gouache.

Students will learn to interpret a painting creatively from a picture/photo, in their own artistic vision. Instructions will be given in choosing a picture and theme for their painting, basic drawing, paint application, color mixing, high/low lights, overall mood and design of the work. Students will complete one or more works of art in this workshop.

  • Water carriers
  • paper towels
  • additional paint brushes

  • watercolor pencils
  • tracing paper
  • graphite paper
  • plastic bubble palettes
  • two (2) panel canvas
  • Az waxed palette
  • plastic zip bags
  • aluminum foil
  • table top easel

Student should bring:

  • Brushes: Variety of acrylic brushes; Round #1, #2, #3 Flat #6, #8, #10, and any additional brushes you may own. If you don't own brushes, I suggest Royal Langnickle, blue handle, found at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Michael's in a variety of sizes. They are very reasonably priced and an overall very good brush.
  • Watercolor Tablet: 9" x 12" 140# cold pressed watercolor tablet, spiral bound.
  • Blue painter's tape
  • Plastic palette knife, disposable 9 x 12 palette
  • Windsor Newton or Holbein tube gouache (not acryl):
    • yellow, blue, red, white and black. These are your basic colors.
    • Also purchase permanent green, brilliant violet, yellow ochre, burnt sienna. You may buy student grade if you so choose, but they have less opacity than the premium grade paints listed.
  • Basic kit: pencil, gum eraser, ruler, pencil sharpener

Optional:

  • Small paint carrier with sealed lid
