This painting is all about creating interesting and colorful shapes using the negative painting technique. The step by step instruction allows painters of all levels of experience to complete a successful painting. We will be using a wet into wet technique to create the under painting and proceed with carving out geometric shapes in the background. Each time I paint this piece it turns out a little different and that is a good thing. Yours will be your own unique piece of art. Experienced painters will be able to complete their painting in class. Students with less experience will be able to paint at their own pace and complete their painting at home.

Kit/Materials Fee (payable to instructor at class time):

  • $20.00 includes:
  • Written instructions and color photo
  • Arches 140 lb cold press watercolor paper (15" x 11")
  • Mijello Mission Gold paints used in this painting
  • Moo Eraser
  • Foam plate/pallet for watercolor paint
  • Misc. supplies

Student should bring:

  • Your usual painting supplies which should include at least 2 water containers, paper towels, pop-up tissues, a fine mist spray bottle for water.
  • Brushes: You may use your regular watercolor brushes. I use Scharff 960 Aqua Flow Super Round, Scharff #310 White Nylon round brushes sizes #8 and #4, and a variety of scrubby brushes (Scharff Moon #222 brushes sizes #2, #4, #6, used for corrections and lifting off paint.) I will have Scharff brushes for purchase if you choose.
  • Pencil and ruler
  • White watercolor pencil or charcoal pencil
  • Hair dryer is helpful, but not necessary
  • Stabilo pencil
  • Permanent black ink pen (micron or Gelliroll Fabric pen or Faber-Castell Pitt Pen)
  • Gold metallic pen-optional
  • A board to support your painting is helpful
