Collagraphy is a printmaking process is which materials are applied to a rigid surface to create the printing plate. With encaustic collagraphy, wax is used to build up the plate. I developed this technique because I wanted to experiment with encaustic collagraphs, but didn’t have easy access to an etching press.

While there is a huge difference between an etching press and a pasta machine, it’s amazing what you can do! You’ll get 3 plates to experiment with (plates can be scraped back and reused, or you can purchase additional plates in class). You’ll learn how to build up the surface and develop texture and line, how to ink your plate, and how to pull your print. While the focus will be on encaustic collagraph, I will also demonstrate other printing techniques that can be achieved using 3” x 5” acrylic plates and a pasta machine, including drypoint and nature printing – and you’ll get a clean plate for those experiments.

Whether you’ve done any printmaking before or not, this is a marvelous opportunity to play and experiment!

Materials Fee: $10 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
4 pre-cut acrylic plates per student –3”x 5” , 1/16” thickness (also called .06)
Sandpaper
Printing-making paper (Japanese papers and Rives BFK Lightweight)
Craft felt/foam and wax paper for your printing “blanket”
Newsprint

Instructor will provide for use in workshop:
Wax medium
Brushes, awls and scraping tools
Pasta machines
Heat guns
Wax fountain pens
Use of a variety of water-soluble inks and tack reducer
Gloves, Piece of acrylic or glass to mix ink on, Palette knife
Paper towels and netting
Objects for texture and direct printing experimentation

Students should bring:
