Record your private thoughts in an intimate pocket journal that nests inside a weathered shrine. In the morning, we’ll apply Milk Paint, Danish Oil and other surface treatments to create a unique weathered shrine. You’ll add a watchful image to the back wall of the shrine and line the walls with velvet to complete it. In the afternoon, we’ll create a small pocket journal that will reside inside the shrine by collating individual sheets of paper into signatures and then sewing the signatures to a leather spine. We’ll use Maple, Alder, Walnut or other hardwoods to create covers by sanding and distressing the wood blanks to create the illusion of age. You’ll finish the project by insetting a watchful eye on the front cover and then fabricating a simple leather closure to keep the book closed.

NOTE: The instructor will demonstrate two methods for building the shrine in class but because of time limitations, a prefabricated shrine will be provided by the instructor.

Supplies Provided by the Instructor: The instructor will provide all tools necessary for completing the project

Materials Fee: $30 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
One 5” x 8” Prefabricated hardwood shrine
Two 2 ¼” X 3 ¼” Book covers (Alder, Maple or Walnut*)
Twenty-four pieces of 300gm Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper
One piece of leather for the spine
Two yards of 4-ply Waxed Irish Linen thread
Acrylic lens to highlight the watchful eye
Velvet for Shrine interior
Consumables (milk paint, wax, adhesives, etc.)
Course Booklet with links to instructional videos

*Specific hardwoods are subject to availability and the instructor reserves the right to substitute comparable hardwoods if necessary.

Student Should Bring:
Students are requested to bring a “watchful” or sacred image to apply to the back inside wall of the shrine. Students are also requested to bring “Book Binding Basics” if they have them.

Basics include:
Bookbinding awl
Size 18 or 20 tapestry needles
Japanese Screw Punch with a 1mm bit
A bone folder
Heat gun (optional)

A dust mask is also recommended for students who may be sensitive to dust. The instructor will provide all tools necessary but if some students have their own tools it will reduce congestion at some of the workstations. Extra heat guns would be helpful to speed the drying of paint if necessary.
