If you have experimented with mixed media, you have experienced creating an interesting but complex surface that often lacks impact. The design term “Dazzle” refers to having so many colors, so many shapes, that the eye doesn’t know where to look and cannot focus. Students in this class will create a many layered surface with great texture, interesting colors and a variety of gestural marks, and then will implement options for simplifying their composition. Techniques presented will have relevance for any unfinished artwork at home!

Topics of discussion will be: figure-ground relationships, scale, value contrasts, using a grid, negative painting, collage, cropping and how to find subject matter.

Materials Fee: $5 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
Collage materials
Stencils
Plastic wrap
Plastic room keys
Paper palettes
Some paint
Adhesive for metal leafing

Students should bring:
Your choice of acrylic paint: at least 3 colors plus black and white
Pencils
2” synthetic brush (a cheap hardware brush is fine)
Small detail brush
Water container
Small jar of regular matte or gloss medium
A few sheets of metal leafing (gold, silver, or copper)
Your preferred surface to paint on: 140 or 300 lb watercolor paper, stretched canvas, boards, or cradled panels (I like to work on 24x24 cradled panels from Cheap Joes). You can bring extra substrates if you wish to do more than one painting!
