Frida Kahlo created her self-portraits as a way of diarizing her life. Loaded with symbolism and powerful imagery she tells a little more of her story with every canvas she paints. Collectively her retratos (portraits) essentially form a biography highlighting the most challenging moments of her life and providing us, her audience, with an intimate look at this artist’s soul.
In honor of one of the most influential female artists of our time, we are going to create mixed-media Retratos of our own. Transforming a humble canvas into rich and colourful tapestry we’ll integrate our own symbolism and exert our own influence over the story we tell. Whether you choose to use Frida as your subject, another influential person that has inspired you, or whether you bravely follow in Frida’s footsteps and tackle your own self-portrait is completely up to you.

White gel pen
Black Sharpie - extra fine tip
Portfolio brand Pastels
Watersoluble Crayons like Caran d'Arche
Copic markers
Gesso
Various mark making tools
Student should bring:
20” X 36” of unstretched primed canvas (easy to roll for travel)
Paper, ephemera and collage items, think textures and symbols and bring your favourites (Flowers, butterflies, wings, numbers, words…anything you love, tissue paper, old sewing patterns, lace, handmade papers, old letters, text from an old book….you get the idea) Sections of beautiful giftwrap or wallpapers make great backgrounds
**Remember the scale that we are working on is BIG so have some of your images photocopied large!
Photocopies on glossy paper of Frida, or whomever the subject of your portrait will be (**faces should fill up most of the space of an 8½X11 sheet of paper) bring 2-3 copies of it so you feel free to really explore without worry **** NO INKJET prints….photocopies or laser print only (I will bring a few Frida faces as well in case you can’t find one)
Paint – Golden Acrylics fluid or heavy body (white, black, and any blue, red, and yellow, plus a couple more of your favourites) Some of my paint favorites: Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, and Quinacridone Crimson, Pthalo Blue, Van Dyke Brown, Green Gold, Pyrrole Red, Pthalo Turquoise
Paintbrushes – bring just a few in different sizes (make sure you have at least one larger (about 2” cheap brush from hardware store) and one better quality detail brush) plus a few more.
Palette & Water Container
Paper towel & baby wipes
Golden Matte medium – large 16oz. (when you shake the bottle it should sound like it has the consistency of syrup, not mayonnaise)
Scissors
Your usual marking making tools (pencils, markers, etc.)
Portfolio pastels (bring them if you have them…I’ll have some for sharing)
