Prerequisite: Students should be comfortable with beginning jewelry making skills

Although offered individually on the schedule, Forge On and Form It comprise a 2 day workshop that focuses on the process of taking your metalsmithing skills to the next level. "Never be limited to flat metal again.!" These skills will allow you to turn your ideas into 3-d reality ( without a hydraulic press) using only hammers, anvil and wood forms. Metal is very malleable when you know how and have a few simple tools. Make sheet dome, cup and spiral. Learn what Synclastic and Anticlastic forming is all about. You may choose to take either of the workshops as an individual experience; however it's recommended that you consider spending both days to maximize your metalsmithing experience. In appreciation for attending BOTH Form It And Forge On, you will receive a nylon forming hammer to use in class and to keep.

Form It

Give sheet metal a 3-D shape and never be stuck with flat metal again. Learn the terminology and the basics of Anticlastic and Synclastic forming, using copper and brass sheet. Plus what tools to buy and what you can "innovate, scrounge and make do".

We will start with a quick overview of basic dapping: round in block, oval in wood form and how to make needed wood forms and the basics of annealing. Then on to:
Synclastic forming: make a puffed cuff bracelet in copper, shaped with hammers on wood form
Anticlastic forming: form a bracelet in copper on anvil horn or wood sinusoidal stake, cuff or bangle
Spiculum: how to form a simple spiculum shape using red brass to make a pendant or earrings

Metals and Expendables, we will be working with 22 g sheet copper & brass, plus the use of:
Torches for annealing
Fuel
P ickle
Wood forms
Vises
Some hammers and stakes
Some finishing equipment provided.

Cross peen hammers
Torches for annealing
Fuel
Pickle
Bracelet mandrel
Grinder/ buffer
Scratch brush
Jumprings
Mounted vises, anvils, stumps, hammers & mallets and a flex shaft to share

Students should bring (or feel free to contact Instructor for suggestions for tools & vise set-up or if you would like for Instructor to supply needed tools for purchase):
Larger polished or smooth Ball Peen hammer, OR recommended forming hammer
A nylon forming hammer like this OR this
Metal shears
Leather or nylon mallet
Sanding sticks and your basic hand tools are handy
Any forming hammers, cross peens and texturing hammers you may already have
Your own sturdy vise that can be clamped on to table will allow you to make full use of class time. I have some that we will share. The small clamp on jewelers or hobby vise is usually not strong enough.
