The study of color is complex and technical. It involves physics and light wavelengths and the physiology of our eyes and our brains. In fact, “color theory” is a generic term for many different theories of how color works. We’re not going to spend any time going over complex color theory. Knowing what light wavelength red is won’t make a difference in your art. However, knowing how to use red effectively will make a huge difference.

In this class we will combine art techniques with color prowess. I will show you how I use color to create contrast and pop without making mud in the process. I will also teach you how to wield neutrals--black and white--to help control layers, isolate focal points, and calm down color chaos. We’ll incorporate print making and hand-painted papers into our finished pieces. We’ll practice in our journals and then make a large painting to show off our skills.

Sheets of 18x24 Watercolor paper
Ephemera packet
Detailed handout
Deli paper

Supplies Provided by the Instructor for use in class:
Stencils
Ink sprays
Neocolor II crayons and Portfolio Oil Pastels
Spray paint
Sewing machine
Fine line applicators

Student Should Bring:
Basic tool kit: craft sheet, paint brushes, rag/cloth, pencil, scissors, water container to clean your brushes, palette knife, baby wipes, paper towels, old gift card to use as a scraper, water container to clean your brushes in, paper plate or palette paper to use as a palette (or you can just use your craft sheet).
White acrylic gesso
Gel medium (I prefer soft gel matte)
Acrylic paint. Bring your favorite colors, and try to include a primary red, yellow, and blue.
Paintbrushes. Include a small flat or bright, a round for details, and a large flat or bright for covering backgrounds quickly.
Regular pencil
Pencil sharpener
Markers, like Montana Paint markers or other pens that work on dried paint
Your art journal
An assortment of images and ephemera. Choose images and symbols that speak to you and that you like a lot.
