A sketchbook, the backbone and workhorse of creativity, develops the notes and is the practice or foundation for expression - the HOW. While the Visual Journal, more of a processing tool, uncovers the language of the soul, or the WHY. In this workshop we will learn to combine technique or practice with the authentic language or artistic vocabulary unique to each artist. The visual journaling aspect of this workshop, that is, combining words with imagery, will not be about the introspective process of journaling, but rather the application of those same tools for our artistic query: what do I want to make, how, why, what size, when, where, what materials, and most importantly, what is the language or vocabulary of my imagery?

In the “Artist’s Journal,” we will ask ourselves questions about the nature of our artwork and expression, investigate what we truly want to do with our art, and even muse over possibilities for a series through artmaking. In this workshop we strive for joy, fulfillment, achievement, and the supreme heart’s ease that comes from artistic expression. The Artist Journal is truly an artist’s playground.

Instructor will provide:
$20.00 “Artist’s Journal” workbook is included in class fee!
Wax paper
Wet Wipes for cleanup.

Student should bring:
Visual Journal, Art Journal, sketchbook, blank book or altered book (Check out my free tutorial video to help you choose a book for your artist journaling process! I share my vast collection of books!) ) Any size is fine, but larger will be more expansive.
Your favorite mixed media supplies. (If you don’t have any favorites I have a list below of my faves!)
Include some writing tools and acrylic paint in at least one light color and one dark.
You will need a big glue stick such as UHU or your favorite glue
Collage Items: random collage items (copies of things that are precious), one magazine to cut up, one poetry book to cut up (you can share with friends)

Jule’s Tools -My favorite Mixed Media Supplies (things you'll need to bring):
Glue - I love big UHU gluesticks and carry 3
Scissors
Some brushes for your paints (no sponge brushes) & a jar for water
A rag or two
Rubber stamp letters - I have a big set and a small set.
Stamp pads (I highly recommend Staz On stamp pads because we work so quickly)
Acrylic paint- any brand, any color in at least two colors, one light & one dark.
At least two brush markers in different colors.
A permanent black marker
A graphite pencil- regular old number two is fine, but if you can get to an art store get an ebony pencil, or a 6B, or a graphite stick (not charcoal)
White gel pen, white pen and ink, or anything else that can write on dark surfaces.

Optional: china markers in black, white, red.
A couple water color crayons (not portfolios or water based oil sticks).
You may want some rubber stamps or carvings, stencils, and anything else that sounds cool including pink glitter glue!
