A Journal of Copper and Brass 9:00 - 4:30 Tuesday August 4th Steve Salik $145 This workshop is filled.
Student Level: Intermediate - Advanced
Type of Workshop: Project
Prerequisite: None - Demonstrations and hands-on assistance will be provided during the workshop.
Record your deepest thoughts and showcase your art in an aged copper journal that features brass accents. In the morning, we’ll transform ordinary copper sheets into journal covers by texturing the metal to give it more character and the illusion of use. Your instructor will demonstrate basic riveting technique and then using that technique you’ll fasten brass strips to the covers after stamping them with haikus, affirmations, naught verse or insults. Depending on your design, you’ll use the same riveting technique to fasten a bezel to the front cover to hold a small image. We’ll finish the covers by giving them a warm aged look by using one of two aging methods. In the afternoon, you’ll collate individual sheets of paper into signatures and then sew them on to a leather spine using a long stitch. The completed book block will then be sewn to the copper covers and you’ll complete your journal by fabricating a simple closure, and insetting an image into the bezel on the front of the book.
