    Showcase your artwork and writing in a unique journal you can carry with you everywhere you go. In this workshop you’ll learn how to use Milk Paint to create a journal that looks like it has been worn by the years. You’ll begin by layering contrasting colors of paint on red oak covers and then sanding through those layers to simulate a patina of age and wear. Book blocks will be constructed by collating individual sheets of paper into signatures, and then sewing them on to the covers using a Coptic stitch. Next, a brass closure will be fabricated to keep your journal securely closed and it will be attach it to the book. Finally, you’ll complete the project by insetting an image into a metal bezel, attaching it to the front cover and then applying wax to protect the finish.

Materials fee of $25 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
  • Two 3” x 5” pieces of hardwood
  • Twenty-four pieces of 300 gm Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper
  • One piece of leather for the spine
  • Two yards of 4-ply Waxed Irish Linen thread
  • Brass strips and wire for closure
  • Bezel
    and the use of:
  • all tools necessary for completing the project
  • all consumables such as the wax used for finishing the journal

    Students are requested to bring “Book Binding Basics” if they have them. The instructor will provide all tools necessary but if some students have their own tools it will reduce congestion at some of the workstations. Basics include:
  • Awl
  • Size 18 or 20 tapestry needles
  • An image on a Jump drive to inset into the bezel (Contact the instructor for additional information and assistance).
  • Bone folder
  • A dust mask is also recommended for students who may be sensitive when using sandpaper
  • Heat guns would be helpful to speed the drying of paint if necessary
