Santibelli Beautiful, a Santos

    During our day we will use several different mediums to create a Santos unique to only you. We will strip away the religious aspects of the Santos and put a personal and modern twist on it. This Santos will stand over 30 inches tall. We antique and distress the wood frame that I will build for you. We start our day sculpting, painting and attaching the head and arms to the body. In the afternoon we will create a covering (clothes) and add personal accessories to your sculpture.

    Materials fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
  • 30inch wooden base for your Santos
  • Doweling
  • Rebar tie wire
  • Sandpaper
  • 2 part epoxy/plumbers putty
  • Aluminum foil
  • Items to attach the head and arms to the body
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine to share

    • Students should bring:
  • Clay 8 oz. Sculpey
  • 4 oz gesso
  • Golden acrylics or high quality paints:
    • Titan Buff
    • Quinacridone/Nickel Azo Gold
    • Burnt Umber
    • Titanium White,
    • Black
    • Brown
    • And blue or green for the eyes
  • 8 oz of white acrylic inexpensive paint for the base
  • Assortment of paint brushes, flat and a fine point detail brush or your favorites to paint eyes mouth and over all face. One 2” brush for your base
  • Clean up rags or paper towels
  • 15 inch porcelain doll (I often find mine from the Salvation Army or Goodwill $4 to $7 is all I pay) Try to find dolls that have just a neck and not the chest piece attached (no décolletage). We will be using the arms and hands of the porcelain doll, I think it’s ok to use one with a few broken fingers it adds to the antique feeling and we will be removing the hair so don’t be afraid to bring a doll that is worn.
  • 2 yards of fabric plus some remnants to dress your Santos, I use muted fabrics such as muslin, canvas, linens, cotton, cheesecloth, old silk in creams and off whites. Torn and worn linens work great. I would bring one or two pieces that are at least 1 yard and then remnants to rip and layer with.
  • Bring thread and needles of different sizes
  • old laces, fabric doilies or table runners
  • buttons
  • string
  • any trinkets that you have been saving
  • Milagros, rosary beads or an old cross will add authenticity to your Santos
  • Scissors
  • If you are driving it would be nice to have a sewing machine (thanks)
