This is a 9 hour workshop.
In this class I will be teaching you how to make a fabric 4 signature book (6" x 8") with a wood based front and back cover. I will instruct how to make coptic loop binding technique to attach the front and back cover and all of the signatures. I demonstrate how to make gesso and plaster covered fabric for the pages and how to make lace, fabric, plaster borders to trim your pages.
In the three hour evening class I will demonstrate how to do the loop binding. I will send you a pdf of the loop binding technique prior to class so that you can review the binding before class. The following day (6 hours) we will continue to construct the book and start working on our pages using mixed media painting and collaging techniques . We will work on our cover using collage, image transfers, drawing, painting with watercolors, gesso, alcohol inks and pastels. We will paint portraits, partial figures and flowers. We will also start working on our pages with paint, stamps, applying plaster with stencils to create beautiful textures.
Prepping your pages before class is recommended. I will give you instructions via email on what prepping is needed.
A pdf of the binding and some of the mixed media techniques will be included in the supply kit.Materials fee of $25 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
waxed linen
tapesty needle
2 pieces of wood for the cover (8" x 6")
clothes pins
plaster bandages
fabric strips for attaching the cover to the pages
sample venetian plaster fabrics
pdf's of the binding technique and some of the mixed media techniques
and the use of:assorted stamps and stencils
Students should bring:assorted fabrics for the pages (size 12" x 8"). They could be vintage linens or linen and cotton fabrics of various thicknesses

140lb hot press watercolor paper
joint compound plaster and putty knife
assorted watercolors (reds,blues and yellows) Optional: Daniel Smith watercolors I use are rose madder geniune, burgandy yellow ochre, piemontite geniune
Golden open acrylic titanium white
Reinkers inks- Adirondack - pesto and eggplant
soft pastels-muted colors of your choice
matte medium
gesso
wood or craft glue
Brushes: 1/4" and 1/8" angular brushes (golden taklon) Princeton select carries these and you can get them at Michaels
#0 or "1 pointed watercolor brush for detail work any larger watercolor and acrylic brushes of your choice a cheap utility brush for applying gesso and matte medium
pencils and charcoal
awl for piercing holes for binding book
images of faces and figures to collage or image transfer. I will have a selection of images to offer in class, but try to bring images that you want to use.
