    What happens when pigmented beeswax is encased in glass and heated? Unexpected bliss. We will be making highly experimental soldered pendants filled with wax and other unusual objects. The outcome of each pendant is beyond control as the wax flows beneath the glass. Before diving into waxy territory, we will have a thorough review of soldering basics. Then we will infuse ephemera with beeswax and experiment with encasing this in glass. Lastly, the pièce de résistance as we dive into full wax and pigment, making wax and glass pendants, tiny, beautiful, wearable works of art. As creator of this technique, I am thrilled to announce its first published reveal in Encaustic Revelation, the book, to be released Summer 2014 by North Light Books.

Materials fee of $20 payable to Instructor at class time includes unlimited classroom use of:
  • Encaustic paint
  • Encaustic medium
  • Jump rings
  • Glass for pendants
  • Copper foil
  • Lead free solder
  • Black patina
  • Flux
  • Sal Ammoniac
  • Diamond Glaze
  • Metal cleaner
  • Clothes pins to use as clamps
  • Running pliers
  • Abrasive stone
  • Other small items that may fit within a pendant such as material scraps, thread
  • Ephemera
    as well as the use of Instructor's:
  • Glass cutter
  • Electric skillet
  • Extension Cords
  • Power strips

    Students should bring:
  • Soldering iron with 1/8-1/4” chisel tip, 100w with internal temperature control OR lower wattage soldering iron with a rheostat
  • Sturdy stand for soldering iron
  • Flux brush or small cheap paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Sponge
  • Old hand towel
  • Soldering mat, old cookie sheet, silicone baking mat, or piece of plywood to be used as a worksurface, minimum size 10x12”
  • Flat or bent nose pliers for attaching jump rings
  • Parallel grip flat nose pliers (clothes pins can also work)
  • Fid or bone folder for burnishing (or the edge of a clothes pin)

    Optional:
  • Small table top vise - (Mini-tabletop suction vise - On Amazon.com looks quite sufficient)
  • Small bits of ephemera
  • Seed beads (tiny)
  • Chain, chokers or necklaces for the pendants
