Dug from the Ruins: A Polymer Clay Art Journal

    Display your visual journaling style in a unique journal that looks like its been dug from ancient or alien ruins. In this workshop, you’ll use polymer clay to create a journal that features miniature sculptures or mold-made elements. The instructor will explain how to properly condition the clay for use, utilize simple objects to create surface textures and then demonstrate how to create small sculptural elements sculptures or use molds to provide the main elements for your journal. Acrylic paint will then be used to color to your journal and create a patina of age. You’ll create a book block from Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper and then bind your journal by either sewing the book block onto a leather spine, or by using a Coptic stitch.

Materials fee of $25 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
  • Polymer Clay
  • Twenty-four pieces of 300 gm Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper
  • One piece of leather for the spine
  • Two yards of 4-ply Waxed Irish Linen thread
  • Leather strap for the closure
  • Copper or Brass wire for closure
    and the use of:
  • molds
  • all tools necessary for completing the project
  • all consumables such as the acrylic paint used for finishing the journal

    Students are requested to bring
    “Book Binding Basics” if they have them. The instructor will provide all tools necessary but if some students have their own tools it will reduce congestion at some of the workstations. Basics include:
  • Bookbinding awl
  • Size 18 or 20 tapestry needles
  • Japanese Screw Punch with a 1mm bit
  • Bone folder
  • A dust mask is also recommended for students who may be sensitive when using sandpaper
  • Heat guns would be helpful to speed the drying of paint if necessary.
