3D Tintype Monochrome Shadow Box Dioramas

    Who doesn’t love tintypes? They are my favorite type of portrait, and I just loved their haunting imagery. In this course, we will construct an elaborate three dimensional version of this unique art form. First, we construct a miniature diorama, next, paint it in monochrome to resemble a vintage tintype, then frame it behind glass for a magnificent effect. Students will learn many useful techniques for mixed media assemblage as they construct this curious piece. Students will receive instruction in several useful mixed media techniques including sawing, drilling, joining, painting, and other problem solving skills as we alter various materials such as wood, metal, resin, fabric, and more!     Materials fee of $20 payable to Instructor at class time covers everything else you will need for the project, but feel free to bring any of your own favorite:
  • trims, lace, fabrics
  • textured papers
  • toothpicks
  • embellishments
  • popsicle sticks
  • photos
  • cool collage supplies
  • doll furniture, and other found objects.-
  • Suggestions for finding a resin figurine are: second hand stores, quinceanera dolls, toys, Hobby Lobby, or antique shops. Look for figures with plenty of details, NO porcelain figures.

    Students should bring the following tools and supplies:
  • 1 wooden box, approximately 2-3” deep
  • 1 picture frame that matches the size of the box with or without glass (8x10, 5x7, 3x4, etc)
  • 1 resin or plastic figurine that fits inside the box
  • 1 small bottle dark brown (or black) acrylic paint - One could substitute Sophisticated Finishes Copper Surfacer and Green Patina for a weathered metal look instead.
  • 1 small bottle vintage white acrylic paint
  • 1 bottle Crafter’s Pick Ultimate Glue
  • Paint brushes, sponges, stipple brush
  • Rags or paper towels and painting clothes/apron (you might even want some rubber gloves
  • If you have a Dremel, bring it, along with the accessories. If not, you are welcome use one of mine.
