In this workshop we will create a wearable art doll neckpiece. Taking copper mesh, we will form her a skirt, attaching it to her soldered body. We will create her some wings using the same mesh and wire, soldering these also to her body. She is a party gal so she has to wear her hat, created from a cone and stamped solder. Final embellishments can be rhinestones, buttons and charms. Optional – create a wire wrapped tassel of fibers and lace that will dangle off of her, or attach a charm or string of charms. If you would like to attach wire wrapped beads and don’t know how, I can show you how to do that too. Just bring along your tools, wire and beads. I will also give you other options on how you can finish off her skirt. Choose your colors of a combination of Gilder’s Paste for overall look (available in class). Finish off your piece with a chain of your choosing, or simple ribbon, adding your hand made velvet pieces with French knot rosettes. Wear her or simply hang her on your wall as a decorative piece. The finished doll will measure approx. 3 inches long with a wingspan of 2 inches. She is little and requires small intricate detail work.

Kit Fee of $15 payable to Instructor at class time includes:

  • copper mesh
  • brass strip
  • tinned wire
  • velvet ribbon for inserts (a few color choices)
  • sari silk for rosettes

    I will also have additional velvet and sari silk ribbons for sale in class.

Supplies Instructor will have on hand to share:

  • Various colors of Gilders Paste
  • rubber stamps
  • hammer
  • anvil
  • wire cutters
  • pliers
  • tin snips
  • flux
  • rags
  • embroidery threads
  • needles
  • brushes for cleaning doll
  • alcohol spray for cleaning flux,
  • drill and bits if needed
  • craft sticks
  • scissors for cutting the mesh
  • patina and gloves

Students should bring:

  • tiny bisque or porcelain doll (NOT PLASTIC), approx. 1.5 inches or a little longer is fine
  • Soldering Iron with small tip
  • extension cord
  • unleaded solder
  • flux brush
  • ¼ inch copper tape
  • cone for head found at craft or bead shops that accepts solder (I will have some for sale in class)
  • chain
  • clasps for chain
  • jump rings
  • brass charm
  • tiny button for cone
  • small strip of rhinestones that solder (the ones at Wal-Mart solder well)
  • wire cutters
  • 2 small pliers
  • small scissors for fabric cutting
  • lace bits for chain inserts
  • needle and thread
  • metal bench block if you have one - I’ll have some to share in class but please bring yours if you don’t want to wait
  • small metal cookie sheet to solder on
  • small hammer (will have some available to share)
  • small table Ott Light if you want more light with extension cord
  • small metal file - I will have some of these to share also

Optional:

  • ribbons and lace for tassel
