Text & Textiles: Hand stitched story squares
Friday 9:00 - 4:30 $145 Jane LaFazio
Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Process and Project
This class will be meditative in many ways. We’ll be doing some journaling on fabric (I’ll give you writing prompts) then we’ll tear and cut the fabric, combine it with other small bits of fabric, paper and ephemera to create small hand stitched ‘story squares.’ You’ll learn some hand embroidery stitches, ways to assemble diverse materials (paper, cloth, rocks etc) and create interesting compositions. Near the end of the day, you’ll assemble your squares into a small, very personal art quilt twelve inches square.
Materials fee of $8 payable to Instructor at class time includes:
- Gel pens for writing on fabric
- felt for background (cut to 12x12 in a variety of colors. ~30% wool)
- Stitch handout
- tulle and fusible webbing
Students should bring:
- White or off white fabric to write on
- scissors for fabric
- thread
- pins
- needle
- embroidery threads
- a small rock, shell, one key, some beads, buttons or charms. Just what you already have.
- small bits of fabrics that you love
- low loft batting approximately ½ yard.
