On a Wing

On A Wing was born soon after buying a wing component from a friend of mine. When I spotted it, I just knew it would work well layered on a cuff.

We will begin by etching a brass cuff. Next, after using a favorite cold join method to attach the wing, we will begin adding some movement to your cuff. By simply adding a line of dangles, you will do just that. What kind of dangles you might ask? How about tiny resin charms, little nests I call “nesties”, perhaps a pewter bird or monopoly pieces. Adding baroque pearls, tiny faceted gemstones, or bits of vintage rhinestone baubles, are also great options. Lastly, we’ll make time to play with one of my favorite patina options, Gilders Paste. So many possibilities await you in this class. Won’t you join me?

  • Metal Cold Chisel (1/4” & 5/16”)
  • Butane Micro-Torch and Butane
  • Magnesium Soldering Block and/or Inexpensive Cookie Sheet with a Lip

  • Clear Finish Matte Spray & Renaissance Wax

  • Metal Jewelry File, #2 Flat
  • Metal Hole Punch Pliers, 1.8mm ( www.beaducation.com)
  • Center Punch, 5/32” or ¼” (not automatic, Local Hardware Store)
  • Metal Awl or Scribe (Local Hardware Store)
  • Flush Cutters
  • Pliers, Chain-Nose, Flat-Nose, Round-Nose
  • Ball Peen Hammer
  • Steel Bench Block & Bench Pad
  • Rubber or Rawhide Mallet
  • 1/8” drill bit (Local Hardware Store)
  • Steel Bench Block & Bench Pad
  • Eye Pins, Head Pins, Jump Rings, Sterling Silver (or your choice of base metal) OR
  • Choice of Base Metal or Sterling Silver Half-Hard Wire, 22 gauge (amount depends on amount of wire wrapping you will do)
  • Bronze or Half-Hard Sterling Silver Wire to make a “nestie”: 3’-20 gauge & 4’-22 gauge

Suggested/Optional Attachments:

  • Small faceted gemstones, baroque or freshwater pearls-4mm
  • Rhinestone dangles
  • Czech glass bead
  • All sorts of small charms
  • Monopoly pieces
  • Crystal rondells (5-6mm)
  • Small vintage rhinestone dangles or scatter pins
  • I will have some small etched and/or stamped words for purchase in class or please bring your own favorite small word stamped or etched on a 1 1/4" long by 1/2" wide piece of 24 gauge nickel, copper or brass sheet metal.
