In this workshop you will create a personal dossier - a handmade, mixed media journal that you can use long after the workshop ends. Use it as a daily journal, a travel journal, a family scrapbook, or a theme-based diary for your interests, hobbies, or collections. During the workshop you will learn a variety of mixed media techniques for creating layers, texture, and dimension. We will be using gesso, acrylic paint, and glazes together with embossing and debossing techniques to create the pages. A simple approach to binding will allow you to pull the entire project together and to add or remove pages to your dossier at any point in the future. While this workshop is project based, and you will all leave with your own journal, all the techniques that we are using today can be easily applied to so many other art projects as well.

  • Instructor will provide assorted mixed media materials and supplies including:
  • Waxed linen thread
  • Needles
  • Assorted mixed media materials and supplies
  • as well as use of eyelet setting tools

Students should bring:

  • 14 book pages with text and images based on your theme (if making a daily journal chose dictionary pages; if making a travel journal chose pages from a travel guide for your destination, etc.)
  • 7 sheets of 90lb-100lb watercolor or drawing paper cut to match the size of your book pages
  • 2 sheets of 140lb watercolor or drawing paper cut to match the size of your book pages
  • white gesso
  • fluid acrylics (about 8 colors)
  • Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid
  • matte medium
  • paint brushes (assorted sizes)
  • water container
  • paint palette
  • brayer
  • scissors or craft knife
  • assorted rubber/clear stamps (including full letter set)
  • ink pads in assorted colors
  • favorite pens and markers
  • assorted rub-ons and/or stickers including many letters
  • low tech texture tools (corrugated cardboard, embossed/textured paper, etc)
  • 12 eyelets
  • eyelet setting tools
