Are you a Colorist or would you like to bring out your inner Colorist? Let’s play with Encaustic Wax- the perfect medium for layering color, breaking down color, and digging out and adding in new color! In this class we will begin with Color Theory: what makes colors tick- then take a look at what colors we are drawn to. Then I will teach you how to decipher those colors, and on to layering, digging, pouring and surface rubs. Fill your eyes with color like you’ve never done, and your mind with understanding. You can do it! I’ll bring you through the process!

What is Encaustic Painting? Encaustic Painting, first invented by the Greeks for ships, and developed by the Egyptians for Portraiture, is experiencing a fresh revival among Mixed Media Artists, since lying dormant in the Egyptian tombs. The process entails the layering on, and scraping away of warm, colorful beeswax (mixed with tree sap), the surface of which can be manipulated with all types of Mixed Media processes, resulting in fascinating and luminous paintings with transparent tendencies.

Students will learn encaustic painting techniques from the ground up and will leave class with a number of gorgeous Encaustic Paintings.

Kit fee of $45 payable to Instructor at class time includes:

  • all the supplies necessary to make four Encaustic Paintings
    • including 6”x 8” boards
    • Encaustic Medium
    • Encaustic Paints
    • a large variety of mixed media supplies
    • use of all the Encaustic tools below

Instructor will provide supplies for sharing:

  • paint brushes
  • griddles
  • wax scraping and incising tools
  • objects for mark-making
  • a variety of mixed media surface treatments

Students should bring:

  • Viva Paper Towels are lint free, so bring a roll or some sheets in your luggage for use in surface play.
  • A few pairs of Latex or Nitrile gloves for mixed media play.
  • Wax Paper for taking your paintings home.
  • Magazine photos or imagery with colors that knock your socks off, so we can interpret and use them as a personal palette for you.
  • Optional: Colorful or metallic ribbon or thread (I will be showing specifically the embedding of ribbon, but I will be bringing ribbon as well)
  • Found objects for embedding or mark-making (I’ll have lots of mark making supplies, but embedded objects go home with you!)

Luminous Encaustic Kits will be available for purchase after class and at my instructor’s table.
