Have you ever wondered what happens to all those paintbrushes after they have been used and abused? They start hanging out with shady underworld types of the art world like Willy “Crunchy Palette” Magee, Bonnie Broken Pencils, and Muddy Watercolors. At that point it’s too late…. there’s no rehabilitating those Bad Brushes after those hooligans get to them. So if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em
In this class we're going to take those old battered brushes of yours and give them a bit of personality. The more dried out and crunchy, the better. Using found objects and old doll parts you will transform these common bad-hair brushes into the most notorious collection of paint pushers this side of the Pecos. Get ready for a “brush with danger”.
Students should bring:
Stuff:- Old Brushes -big ol’ nasty, worn-out, paint brushes to modify into your Bad Brush.
- Doll parts – mostly heads (things with eyes, mouths etc.), but hands can come in “handy” too!
- More Stuff- like watch parts, gears, typewriter parts….just about anything, really. Milagros, bolts, pieces of old metal, straps of leather…anything.
- Paint Brushes (to actually paint with) - a couple small detail brushes, and some cheap brushes (1/2 inch to 1 inch in size)
Adhesives:- Aves Apoxy Clay (1/4lb (or more) Here’s a link if you have trouble finding it. www.avesstudio.com
- Dap Kwik seal plus (white) or Molding Paste (also called modeling paste)
- E6000
Paints (either fluid or heavy body):- Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold
- Black (Mars or Carbon)
- Titanium White
- Pthalo Green (blue shade)
- Dioxazine Purple
- Quinacridone Crimson
- Optional Paint:
- Kroma Crackle – www.kromaacrylics.com
- Small bottle of Elmer’s glue (if you bring Kroma Crackle)
- Anthraquinone Blue
- Pthalo Blue (red or green shade)
- Van Dyke Brown

- Heat gun
