Capture and contain your artistic spirit in the form of a one-of-a-kind artist book. In this workshop you will transform the most basic of materials – commercial book covers, cardstock, and paper – into a memorable and unique page turner. The focus of the class will be on learning a no-sew binding technique that will allow you to bind single sheets into your book. Once your books are bound, we will also move on to creating collaged pages using a grided-background technique. Your choice of ephemera, stamps, rub ons, marks, drawings, etc. will be used to add design to the pages. Techniques such as flip-out pages and tabs will be covered. You will leave with a fully bound book and will have made a great start on your inner, collaged pages - which, given the limitations of time, you will need to complete at home. This class is tailored to both the beginner and the advanced book maker.

  • Instructor will provide assorted mixed media materials and supplies including:
  • extra cardstock
  • designed paper
  • ephemera
  • brads
  • rub ons
  • adhesives
  • as well as use of dremel, markers and pens, rubber stamps and ink pads, etc.

Students should bring:

  • Book covers: Matching front and back commercial book covers, separated from the book block. While this technique can be applied to any size covers, for this workshop try to find more compact covers sized around 6.5” x 4”-ish.
  • Cardstock: At least 6-12 sheets of either 8.5 x 11 or 12 x 12 cardstock. Color matters as the edges of the cardstock will be seen as part of the binding. Note that the larger your book covers, the more cardstock you will need for the binding and pages.
  • Adhesive: Your choice of adhesive for the book construction (glue sticks, PVA, etc.) and for the collaged pages (matte medium, glue stick, etc.).
  • Paper: Your choice of assorted paper for the collaged pages, including hand painted, scrapbook paper, ephemera, magazine pages, etc. Be sure that some paper has designs or/or text and that some paper is plain.
  • Brads: 4 brads, with prongs long enough to go through your book covers.
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Bone folder
  • Dremel (optional): We will be using a Dremel to drill holes into our book covers. I will have a single Dremel that all students can use but if you happen to have one at the retreat, feel free to bring it.
  • Flotsam & Jetsam: Decorating your pages and your cover is where your personality will come out. Bring in your choice of alphabet and design rubber/clear stamps plus assorted ink pads, alphabet and design rub ons, favorite pens and markers, ephemera, hand painted papers, favorite scrabook paper, scraps of fabric, stickers, decorative and/or masking tape, your own small drawings, magazine clippings of images and text, etc. You can also bring lightweight metal pieces for your cover but note that for the workshop itself, we will only be using glue to attach our objects to the cover.
