Encaustic Wax Collage

Enjoy a fun and informative session while learning and practicing the basics of encaustic wax collage. Working on small canvas or encaustic board, techniques in the class will cover building a traditional collage utilizing encaustic wax as a top layer to protect and enhance your work, building a collage with encaustic wax as the adhesive between layers, and taking your collage off the “board” with embellishments and 3D effects. Additional techniques will include stencils, incising and mark-making, adding color with a variety of methods, basic image transfers and will enable the student to express themselves whether their style is whimsical and light or takes a more serious tone.
Materials Fee of $20 payable to Instructor at class time includes unlimited classroom use of:
- Encaustic Wax Medium
- Pigmented Encaustic
- Glue
- Oil Pastels and Oil pigment sticks
- Chalks, Drawing Pastels, ink
- Image transfer sheets
- Collage material
Equipment provided by instructor:
- Skillets to heat wax
- Aluminum bowls and containers
- Brushes
- Heat guns
- Mini iron
- Extension cords
- Incising tools
- Stencils
Students should bring:
- Encaustic panel or board (any size up to 8 x 10)
- Small gallery or museum-depth wrapped canvases (no larger then 6”square)
- Ephemera and collage papers (include lightweight pieces such as sewing patterns – as well as text weight)
- Small ephemera – stamps, stickers, labels, etc.
- Toner based copies if the student has special images they want to use – otherwise some will be provided
- Small pack of baby wipes
- Old spoon
- Fine microfiber cloth or soft cloth such as t-shirt or flannel
