Hearts are one of my favorite symbols and in this workshop we will focus on an embedded polymer clay heart as the centerpiece of our shrines. The unique thing is that the embedded heart pendant will be removable so that when you would like to wear the pendant, you can simply take it out of the shrine! We will explore a variety of mixed media techniques that include rubber stamping, painting, collage, transfers, embedding, beading and metal leaf. This class is a great way to create something that is both an art piece for the wall and a wearable piece of art!

Kit fee of $18 payable to Instructor at class time includes:

  • handmade frame
  • heart bezel

Supplies teacher will bring for use in class:

  • clay blades
  • wax paper
  • gold leaf
  • paint and supplies
  • mica powder
  • Guilder’s paste
  • collage images
  • seed beads
  • stamps
  • rags
  • toaster ovens
  • Staz-On inkpads
  • Distress ink pads

Students should bring:

  • 4-5 small packages of either Premo or Sculpey III polymer clay. Have 3 packages of the same color and one package of a reddish color for your heart. I prefer the darker colors. Make sure the clay is somewhat soft by pressing your thumb into it, if it feels rock hard, don’t buy it! Please condition clay prior to class by kneading it until soft and then rolling into a ball and store in a baggie.
  • Rolling pin or even large diameter PVC pipe works
  • A one-inch paintbrush
  • a pencil with an eraser
  • A small bottle of metallic gold, silver or copper paint- (like the Folk Art small bottles)
  • Small bottle of Weldbond glue
  • A few Doo-dads to embed in clay like charms, buttons, beads, found objects, Milagros, jewelry parts, watch parts, metal findings, found objects. Also a few TINY embellishments for your heart pendant.

  • Optional:

  • ball chain
  • a jump ring
