Type of Workshop: Process

In this workshop you will learn to colorize original vintage photographs. We will use oil paints in a way you never thought possible, giving your photographs a very vintage flair. Bring along those old photos, original black and white only please, that you would like to colorize and frame, or use in your journals or other art work. You will be able to complete 3-12 photos within the time frame of the class. Learn to paint with oils, colorize flesh, what objects in the photograph to paint in the scene and what areas to leave black and white. We’ll examine each photo to find out what color combinations will suit your style and personal taste; discuss shading and light values, how to apply the paint, mixing the medium into the oil paint and cleaning and storing your brushes. Please note that odorless turpentine and oil paints will be used during this class.

Supplies provided by Instructor for us in class:

  • Black and white vintage photographs
  • Oil paints
  • Turpenoid, odorless turpentine

Students should bring:

  • 3-12 black and white, original, vintage photographs (antique stores, eBay, and garage sales) Groups will be difficult so strive for 1-3 people in your photos. The larger the person is in the photograph, the better. I will also have many photographs for you to choose from.
  • #1 round liner oil brush (acrylic brushes may be used, but not reused for acrylic painting)
  • #2 Flat oil brush (acrylic brushes may be used, but not reused for acrylic painting)
  • #2 round oil brush (acrylic brushes may be used, but not reused for acrylic painting)
  • Flat drying box with lid. The box will hold your finished photos overnight for drying, without having them stack on top of each other. An 8” x 10” shirt box will work well. Paint will dry in 24/48 hours.
