Veils of Illumination Tuesday 9 - 4:30 $145 Andrea Matus July 31
Student Level: All
Type of Workshop: Process and Project
Typically collage is about the clever ways we combine items to cover over and transform surfaces; this time we are going to explore this medium in a slightly different way. In this class we will collage incorporating items that are transparent and reflective in nature. Combining transparencies, mica, photos, foils, metallics, textured papers, ephemera, and found objects we will create rich, layered collages, with jewel like depth and vibrancy. Using a wooden box as our base, we are going to design multi-tiered compositions. By learning the secrets of how to combine the visible with semi-visible veils, adding purposeful reflective surfaces and focusing on both the play of light and effects of depth, you will be able to create mesmerizing almost holographic effects. You choose whether the subject is a portrait, landscape or something else entirely.
Instructor will supply:
- Small wooden substrate for our collage
- Hardware for building our piece (screw eyes, jump rings, etc.)
- Paper towel
- Tools for assembling our project
- Metallic paint
- Portfolio Brand Pastels
- Other mark making tools
Students should bring:
- A wooden box (Michaels has a good selection), deep cigar box, shadow box (glass removed), or cradled panel – we want to have an interior space that’s a least 6”x4” (could be up to 8”x5” – but not much bigger) and a depth of about 2”- 3”
- Photos from magazines, vintage photos, family portraits (keep our size in mind, so nothing too large, but a high contrast clear close-up of faces works really well)– please make sure they are photocopies and try to have them copied onto glossy photo paper if possible.
- Copies of some of your imagery on transparency (inkjet is ok, but laser is preferred) – because we are working smaller, you should be able to fit two 5x8 images on one transparency sheet – bring a selection of at least 4 full sheets of transparencies
- Mica – larger pieces (available from US Artquest)
- Paper, ephemera and collage items, think textures and symbols, handmade semi-transparent papers
- Paint: Golden Acrylics fluid or heavy body (white, black, any blue, red, and yellow, plus a couple more of your favorites and at least one metallic paint of your choice)
- Paint Palette (a paper plate will suffice)
- Paintbrushes: bring just a few in different sizes
- Water Container
- Foam brush
- Black sharpie extra fine tip
- Matte medium (liquid not gel)
- Gel medium (gloss)
- Scissors
- E6000 Adhesive
- Small assortment of found objects, chains, old jewelry pieces just about anything
Optional:
- Copper or Brass Foil (a single, lightweight sheet large enough to line the back of your box)
- Flameless tealight (available at dollar stores and Michaels)
