I have forever been drawn into these tattered bits and pieces of history, with each ‘as found’ fragments representing parts of the past. Stories that lie just beneath the surface of these aged, faded relics seem to be waiting to be combined one with another …a story to be spun. If you are drawn to these same bits and pieces of history….this class just may be what you’re looking for.
Symbolism in your artwork will be the focus of this assemblage 101 class. Think of this class as a 3-Dvisual journal page! By exposing and marrying the collections and trinkets that we have stashed in our creative corners, we will be exploring all of the possibilities of ‘how to say and do it differently’ within our art. We will dig into inquiry and reflection. Layers will be created with oddities, discarded junk alongside a cherished token, photo, or note. These layers will add up to a wonderful personal piece of artwork…one that will represent a specific memory or story through the simple juxtaposition of your inanimate new found ‘words’. You will begin to see objects everywhere that will ‘say’ what it is that you want to convey. This class will spur you on to keep creating assemblages with heart messages that reflect personal quests, memories, and special dates embracing life.
I will cover some basic design elements in class, including, color, repetition, scale, and texture, as well as include some quick and easy shortcuts that I have found help keep the creative juices flowing. I will also show you how to "wire" elements, create age, layer and incorporate hidden messages into your work.
Keeping the mindless chatter at bay…this class will also touch upon quieting the harsh critic within, allowing us to move more freely through expression, with much less self-doubt and judgment. This all too familiar thief is something that keeps creativity stuck in our souls. I will move the class way beyond these fears helping them to find their own unique voice…creating a piece that will flow and resonate within. And, last but not least, this class is a free-flowing class where the energy of each artist is an important part of the process. We will take some time at the end of the class to talk about how your artwork transformed (…a dissection so to speak) from a box of stuff into a meaningful piece of artwork. This is a vital part of the class, as it will help you to discover the possibilities of how and why we gather these curious elements.
Supplies…this list is not required but a list to get you thinking of what you should bring to attach with, add dimension to, and layer with for your unique piece.

for your base or 'bones' for your piece....please bring a small box....like a cigar box, or an old tin or a frame...any size will work...just keep in mind getting your artwork home, if you choose a larger frame. here in my example photos, i used as my 'base' a wooden ribbon holder....the kind found in stores to buy yardage from. don't forget to email me for help if you need it. fyi....you may also choose to have your artwork freestanding....sculpture style, instead of a wall hanging.
If you have any questions…please feel free to email me.
