Spellbound by the allure of a glittering vintage rhinestone paste brooch or an antique buckle? Want to work magic with that unique lock or old metal flower? Bring your treasured vintage and found objects to class and I’ll show you how to transform them into a beautiful one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. Heavy on design, this class will show you how to relate each element together harmoniously into a spellbinding composition. This is a workshop loaded with technique. We’ll be covering numerous methods of cold connection and exploring as many techniques as possible to attach your objects. Since each object is unique, the ebb and flow of the class will be dictated by what you, the students, bring and driven by what you want to learn. Discover the alchemy of objects! Students may finish a piece of jewelry in class depending on previous experience and work pace.
Instructor will supply the following :
- Steel wire
- hand drill and bits
- Dremel with bits
- Jewelers saw
- Metal snips
- Various tools
- Rhinestone glue
- Butane torch
- Butane
Students should bring:
- 6” (from jaw tip to handle tip) narrow nose pliers with teeth (hardware store)
- Chain nose jewelry pliers
- Extra-long round nose pliers (riogrande.com)
- Small round nose jewelry pliers
- Flush cutters for wire (craft store type)
- 4 oz. ball peen hammer (Volcano Arts)
- Chasing hammer
- Rawhide mallet or 12 oz. rubber dead blow hammer
- Steel bench block
- Bench pillow (or hand towel) for use under bench block
- Center punch (hardware store)
- Metal file, fine (size 0)
- Fine grit foam sanding block
- Measuring tape or ruler
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Awl
- Tweezers (if you’re working with rhinestones)
- 6 inches of 14 gauge sterling wire (for making rivets)
- Small bench vise (for making rivets)
- Bring a few of your favorite vintage and found objects: jewelry parts, watch cases, gears, buttons, game pieces, keys, tin types, glass vials, brooches, shells, small stones, etc.
- Beads or pearls, chain (optional) and a vintage clasp (optional) to complete your piece of jewelry (see photos)

Note: The following list of optional materials and tools is to give you ideas about what to bring. I will be bringing as many different tools to share with the class as possible but please bring any tools and/or materials you may need specific to your unique object. - Wrap n Tap pliers (Rio Grande)
- Power cutters (Rio Grande)
- Jewelers saw and blades
- Bench pin
- 1/16 th size micro eyelets; short, med and/or long
- Micro nuts and bolts
- Dremel with bits (1/8 th and 1/16 th)
- Metal snips
- Small amount of sheet metal, metal trim or filigree if necessary for your design
- Sterling or other wire if you prefer not to work in steel wire
